Knowing the Land
Artist Biography by Todd Carter
Knowing the land is one of my lifelong passions. My mother loved wilderness. She had no fear. As a young child, I slept on the ground in Copper Harbor with bears roaming the campground.
Exploring wilderness strengthens my love for painting local lands and inhabitants. With each painting, I learn and grow as an artist. By exhibiting my art, I learn from everyone I meet. Sharing my art and my joy of learning with others makes me happy.
My artwork is based on experience, exploration, and research. My depictions often begin with photographs. I sketch my subjects onto paper. Then I sketch on prepped canvas. Next, I start mixing my paints and painting basic features. I might work ten hours on a simple painting. On a detailed painting, I might work 140 hours or more.
My ideas come from exploring Upper Peninsula wilderness and from living a good life in Marquette. My curiosity to learn more about the land and its inhabitants gives energy to my creative muses.
